Donald Trump, Eminem and the Storming of the Capitol

The 2016 election of Donald Trump saw Russian interference enact the greatest assault on the American electoral process in modern times. Once again, the 2020 election created the second greatest assault on the American electoral process after Trump, a President who was elected in part because of Russian interference, encouraged supporters to take the Capitol Complex believing that the election was ‘stolen by emboldened radical-left Democrats’.

The extraordinary thing about watching the BBC documentary Four Hours at the Capitol is that the people enacting the violence seemed familiar. They were like confused people I might have gone to school with or met through sports or travelling. Zizek says that the libidinal energy of political ideology can be enjoyed through pre-ideological performances. Next time, instead of threatening to murder Nancy Pelosi and Mike Pence, I suggest expending your libidinal energy through listening to Eminem’s White America, in which he pretends to be the ‘ringleader of this circus of worthless pawns/ Sent to lead the march right up to the steps of Congress/ And piss on the lawns of the White House’.

People are wired towards Trumps words. He is a superstar orator who uses his platform for evil political ends. His attitude and voice are weirdly similar toward the character performed by Eminem around the millennium expressing the identity of a satirical disaffected amoral white America. Unfortunately, with another election looming Trump’s performances might be deadly towards America and the whole planet.
